Essential oils are currently much sought after because of the popularity of holistic healing, touted as a natural way to improve one’s mood, ward off sickness and treat various ailments such as arthritis, dry skin and allergies. The global essential oils market has grown steadily in the last few years and the market size is projected to reach nearly US$11.2 billion by 2022, according to a report from research firm Research and Markets Ltd. in July 2017.

Nowadays, essential oil and aromatherapy are commonly used as relief from the daily grind, a shop newly opened in Macao, called Bodyskin Organic & Aroma, promises a wide selection of skincare products, pure essential oils and aromatherapy preparations – all free of preservatives and made in-house – for people that love all things organic.

Ellis Trading Co. Ltd. runs Bodyskin Organic & Aroma. Previously, the core business of Ellis Trading had been focused on the trading of natural ingredients from Europe, the United States, South East Asia and Mainland China. In recent years, the company opened two shops in Zhuhai selling its own line of organic skincare and essential oil products. It began selling its products online in Macao about a year ago. Having attracted a loyal following among consumers in Macao, the company opened its first bricks-and-mortar shop in the city, in Rua de Ferreira do Amaral.

Preparations dispensed by qualified practitioners of aromatherapy and custom-made skincare products are among of the main offerings of Bodyskin Organic & Aroma. The proprietor of the company, Elise Ng, is a certified aromatherapist. She says her shop aims to give its customers what she calls “a complete aromatherapy experience”.

Aromatherapy is reputed to relieve stress and tension, prevent illness and aid healing. Customers that consult the Bodyskin Organic & Aroma aromatherapist will be advised on the use of specially-formulated organic oils or other preparations through different means, such as smelling, direct application, use in cleansing, massaging and spraying. If the preparations are used in order to hasten healing, customers can consult the aromatherapist again from time to time to gauge their progress.

As an aromatherapist with a wealth of knowledge and a thorough understanding of where to find the ingredients she uses and how to combine them, Ms Ng has full confidence in the effectiveness of her products. “My family has been in the trade since early in 2000 in Fujian, obtaining natural products from all over the world,” she says. “Through the running of the family business, it is a great advantage that we are familiar with the industry and know best where to get high-quality ingredients.”

Currently, Bodyskin Organic & Aroma’s products are available at local supermarkets and pharmacies. With the ever-growing number of tourists coming to Macao annually, Ms Ng says she hopes the business will also benefit. “We are also actively reaching out to promote our brand through different means, such us joining trade shows, matching with potential business partners and showcasing our products at the ‘Macao Ideas’ – the Macao Products Display Centre which is under Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute,” she says.

Each new product launched by Bodyskin Organic & Aroma is extensively tested for at least eight weeks before it goes on sale. The shop uses only the best natural ingredients it can get for its essential oils and skincare products. “For example, we get roses from Bulgaria and blue chrysanthemum from Corsica,” Ms Ng says. “We import the best ingredients from all over the globe and process them in our own factory. In this way, we manage to keep the retail price of the final product at a relatively budget-friendly level.”

Bodyskin Organic & Aroma skincare products are generally sold in small quantities. Ms Ng says this is because all the products are organic and free of chemical additives or preservatives. “Even a 30ml bottle can last for quite a while,” she says. “So we prefer to package our products in small quantities so that they remain fresh and fragrant.”

Apart from its own of products and the services of a certified aromatherapist, Bodyskin Organic & Aroma sells a few premium brands of organic products at prices that will suit all pockets. “No matter whether you are looking for pricey products or budget-friendly products, you will find something matching your needs here,” the proprietor says.

Ms Ng says her first goals in running Bodyskin Organic & Aroma are to break even and to increase public awareness of its brand. “While the shop works as a showroom for what our brand has to offer and provides the services of a qualified practitioner of aromatherapy, the next step will be to set up a laboratory and factory this year so the business can grow,” Ms Ng says.
