European Product Database for Energy Labelling

As of 1 January 2019, suppliers (manufacturers, importers or authorized representatives) need to register their appliances, which require an energy label in the European Product Database for Energy Labelling (EPREL), before selling them on the European market.

Product information to be entered in the database relates to the energy label, technical documentation and compliance monitoring. Suppliers need an EU LOGIN account before starting registering their products.

The EPREL guidelines explains how to manage the entire registration process. EPREL generates all necessary energy labels.

Register a product in EPREL

• For products placed on the EU market from 1 January 2019, their registration must be completed before placing any product on the European market.

• For products placed on the EU market between 1 August 2017 and 31 December 2018, their registration can be completed until 30 June 2019.

• For products placed on the EU market before 1 August 2017, their registration is on a voluntary basis.

The label generator is a complementary tool for just creating a tailor-made energy label (e.g. for printing or for on-line publication).

Energy Label Generator

The Energy Label Generator aims to facilitate the implementation of the labeling delegated Regulations. With the web application, a tailor-made energy label for one product in high resolution pdf format can be created. This can then be used for printing purposes or on the Internet.

The energy labeling requirements for individual product groups are established under the EU’s Energy Labelling framework Regulation (2017/1369). For the following product groups registration is mandatory:

• Air conditioners » Cooking appliances (domestic)

• Dishwashers (household) » Heaters (space and water heaters)

• Lamps » Local space heaters

• Refrigerating appliances (household) » Refrigeration (professional)

• Solid fuel boilers » Televisions

• Tumble dryers » Ventilation units (residential)

• Washing machines (household)

Consumers will be able to search for product models in the EPREL database as of the second quarter 2019. The EPREL database consists of two parts, a public website (available from April; 2019) and the compliance portal.

The Public Website offers information about products subject to energy labels and can be accessed by everyone. The information stored here will not be deleted. The Compliance Portal has a secure database for all the energy efficient products and is where you will register your products. The product information stored here will be kept for 15 years.

Non-EU countries adopt energy labels

The EU energy label has become an international symbol of energy efficiency whose impact has extended well beyond the EU’s boundaries and the appliance sector where it originated. In the EU itself, the label motif of coloured stacked arrows ranging from A (green) to G (red) has been used in non EU countries to label efficiency of buildings, tyres and cars and as to other types of consumer or commercial sector equipment. Elements of the same motif are found in energy labels adopted around the world, be it as direct or near direct copies (most of the countries in central and South America, in Africa, many countries in the Middle East, Russia and other former Soviet states), slightly amended versions (China, Hong Kong, Iran, Tunisia) or versions that copy the colour coding only (Korea, Taipei).
