Cabo Verde’s (Cape Verde’s) statistical system will be “more transparent” with the introduction of a new law approved on Thursday by the specialised commission on Constitutional Affairs, Human Rights, Security and State Reform, said the deputy prime minister and finance minister .

“We will have a more transparent, more audited statistical system and more autonomous and independent management bodies,” said Olavo Correia, adding that the bill that will now return to plenary for approval will give the country an institution focused on “quality and readiness in the production of information.”

The finance minister also said that the new law will require the statistical agency to set a publication schedule so that everyone can access the information and assess the “quality and relevance of the data produced and published,” according to Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress.

The new bill sets out penalties for those who refuse to provide information for statistical purposes, because, according to the Minister of Finance, “statistics are a public asset,” and therefore “everybody is required to take part in their production.”

The next step after the publication of the new law will be the amendment of the Statutes of the National Statistics Institute (INE) and the creation of conditions for the country to have an “increasingly qualified” institution, he said.
