The 18th MIF Completed with Rewarding Outcomes

Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF), hosted by Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), was held at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel from17 to 20 October 2013, with the theme of Co-operation-Key to Business Opportunities. Over1,900 exhibition booths were set up in an area of more than 30,000 square metres. Exhibitors came from more than 50 countries and regions, among which, Italy, Moldova and Russia sent business delegations or set up pavilions for the first time, resulting in an event with increasing international exposure and more varied content.

The four-day event attracted more than 110,600 visits, showing an increase of 12% over the previous year. More than 2,000 business matching sessions were held resulting in the signing of 98 co-operation projects and a total of 51 conferences, seminars and promotional activities were conducted.

Themed Pavilions to Promote the Development of Emerging Industries
The 18th MIF was marked by better contents, strong themes and highlights. Two functional zones were included in 2013, namely the exhibition and sales exhibition zones, to facilitate display and exchanges in more areas and strengthen the effectiveness of business matching to satisfy the various needs of exhibitors, entrepreneurs, industry representatives and the general public. Major pavilions included Chinese Provinces and Cities Pavilion, Trade and Investment Themed Pavilion, Macao Pavilion, Portuguese-speaking Countries Pavilion, Pavilion of Portugal, German Guild Hall, ASEAN Pavilion, Fujian Pavilion, Macao Manufactures and Trade Pavilion, Zhuhai Pavilion, Guangzhou Nansha Pavilion, Zhongshan Cuiheng Pavilion, Macao Creative Pavilion, Pavilion of Quintessential Art Exhibits in Cultural Industry, Asian Magic Association Convention and Macao Fashion Festival 2013. The sales exhibition area included the Macao SME Pavilion, Taiwan Pavilion, China’s Ethnic Groups Pavilion-Commodities, Culture and Handicrafts as well as the Digital Imaging and Photography Equipment Pavilion. To further strengthen Guangdong-Macao trade and economic cooperation, new thematic pavilions on Cuiheng in Zhongshan, Hengqin in Zhuhai and Nansha in Guangzhou were set up to promote their current investment environments, strategic locations, development strengths and future development plans.

Organised for the first time by the Taiwan Trade Centre and themed around “future technologies and smart life”, the Taiwan Excellence Pavilion covered nine major Taiwanese industries, namely information communications, energy conservation and environmental protection, house ware and living, sports and leisure, interactive education, machinery, intermediate industries, medical treatment and culture and creative industry.

The size of the Pavilion of Portugal was enlarged to cover an area of over 1,000 square metres which was twice the size of that of2012 and the largest when compared to the previous year, with an increasing number of participating exhibitors.

In 2013, a Creativity and Business Zone of nearly 5,000 square feet was set up to promote cultural and creative industries. Apart from the well-received cultural and creative projects previously set up at MIF including the Macao Creative Pavilion, Macao Fashion Festival 2013, Shenzhen International Cultural Industry Fair Co. Ltd and the Pavilion of Quintessential Art Exhibits in Cultural Industry, various new cultural and creative products and services from mainland China, Italy, France, Korea and Taiwan also debuted in the 18th MIF.

MIF 2013 also featured the Health Culture Thematic Pavilion and a series of themed activities to introduce the latest trends and new opportunities in related industries, including health food, an area of interest for consumers and the promotion of leisure and health tours, health care, healthy tea consumption and hot springs. The SME Exhibition area was set up again this time and the general public did a lot of shopping. The area included the Macao SME Pavilion, China’s Ethnic Groups Pavilion-Commodities, Cultural Products and Handicrafts, Digital Imaging and Photography Equipment Pavilion, International SME Pavilion and Taiwan Pavilion. Among which, the Macao SME Pavilion received the active participation of over 157 local enterprises, an increase of 20% year on year. The International SME Pavilion attracted the participation of enterprises from Madagascar, Mozambique, Nepal and the Philippines.

Intensify Regional Partnership and Promote the Development as a Service Platform
To complement the 10th anniversary of the Ministerial Conference of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Economic and Trade Co-operation Forum (Macao) held in November 2013, the organizer improved the contents of the Portuguese-speaking Countries Pavilion, for instance, by adding a photography exhibition, organising a business matching cocktail reception and wine tasting activities.

The Portuguese-speaking Countries and Fujian and Macao Economic Exchange Networking Cocktail Reception was held to promote trade and economic collaboration between Macao, mainland China and overseas including PSCs, as well as to strengthen Macao’s distinctive features as a diverse and regional trade and economic service platform.

The “One-Trip, Multi-Stop” service and the “Convention and Exhibition through Train” plan were also effective to help participating merchants in networking and developing business opportunities. During the four days of MIF, more than 2,000 business matching sessions were concluded (an increase of 11.69% year-on-year), 98projects were signed (an increase of 11.36% year-on-year). In 2013, a number of co-operation agreements were signed between countries and regions, further highlighting the role of MIF as economic and trade platform and the role of Macao as a conduit for opening overseas markets and promoting regional co-operation. For instance, the signatories of these agreements included countries or regions from Africa (Madagascar), Eastern Europe, (Russia, Romania), Europe,(Switzerland, Italy, Germany), the Middle East (Dubai) and Southeast Asia, (the Philippines). The projects signed covered construction and machinery co-operation between Macao and Russia, European brand products agencies, tourism promotion and co-operation and travel agency co-operation. Other projects included some emerging industries, such as traditional Chinese medicine, cultural and creative industry, education, brand retailing and sports, which fully demonstrate the effectiveness of MIF in promoting Macao’s economic diversification.

Economic and Trade Forum Series Provides Information on New Opportunities
During MIF, various high-level forums, seminars, presentations on the investment environment and projects in different places, thematic conferences for specific trades and products/services presentations were held to facilitate multi-lateral exchanges and cooperation in business, trade and economy. Major activities included the International Trade and Investment Forum 2013, 10th World Summit of Chinese Entrepreneurs, 3rd Jiangsu-Macao-Portuguese-Speaking Countries Business Forum, 2013 Macao International Traditional Medicine Forum, “How Does the Wine Industry in China respond to the World Market?” Forum, Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Fashion Summit, 2013 Shenzhen-Macao Co-operation Conference of Cultural and Creative Industries.

18th MIF Survey Opinion
IPIM appointed the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities from the University of Macau to carry out a survey during the event. A total of 2,689 valid questionnaires were collected, among which 958were from professional business visitors, 458 from exhibitors, 1,077from the general public and 196 from VIPs. Interviewees were 37.01%were from Macao, followed by mainland China (41.31%), Hong Kong(7.77%) and the remaining 13.91% were from more than 20 countries and regions participating in the 18th MIF.

Data revealed that over 80% of interviewed business participants made favourable comments on Macao’s roles as a trade and business service platform in regional co-operation and in creating development opportunities in other regions and they generally agreed that the convention and exhibition industry is effective in promoting Macao’s economy. Interviewed exhibitors generally agreed that MIF is beneficial to the future development of their company, 90% of the exhibitors thought that MIF should encourage S MEs to organize on-site sales. Interviewed business participants and exhibitors were generally satisfied with the arrangement of the 18th MIF, among which,49.52% had participated in MIF 2012, 46.26% said that it was well organized this year, 38.23% said that was the same as the previous year. Of the general public interviewed, 63.06% attended MIF2012,among which 52.22% said it was better than the previous year, a rise of 0.77% as compare to the figure of 2012, 78.79% said that they would visit again next year. Interviewed VIPs commented favourably on the construction of Macao’s role as a regional co-operation serviceplatform and a world tourism and leisure centre, Macao is able to create development opportunities for other regions.

The 19th MIF will be held from 23 to 26 October 2014.
