STRENGTHENED GUANGDONG-MACAO COLLABORATION TO SEIZEFURTHER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Macao and Guangdong province share similar cultural and geographical backgrounds the two places have maintained close cooperation over the years, since the signing of the Framework Agreement on Guangdong-Macao Co-operation in March 2011, various collaboration projects have been conducted according to schedule and created enormous development opportunities for the trade and business sectors on both sides.

Under the framework of Mainland and Macao Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) and the Framework Agreement of Guangdong-Macao Co-operation (Framework Agreement), exchanges and partnerships between the two have been further enhanced. According to statistical data, trade volume of Guangdong-Macao exports amounted to US$970 million, showing a year-on-year increase of 15%. Macao’ s investment contracts in Guangdong total US$200 million, a rise of 18%compared to the previous year. While promoting collaboration in economy, and the people’s livelihoods, the National Twelfth Five-Year planning focuses on accelerating the liberalisation of trade in services in Guangdong and Macao, in order to provide greater development potential for Macao enterprises, particularly SMEs.

JOINT INVESTMENT PROMOTION OFGUANGDONG-MACAO CO-OPERATIONINDUSTRIAL PARK AS COLLABORATIONPROJECTS ARE CONDUCTED ACCORDING TOSCHEDULE ON HENGQIN

According to the Framework Agreement, the two will work together to develop into the most vibrant and competitive cities in the Asia Pacific region. Along with the development of the two National New Districts, namely Nansha in Guangzhou, Hengqin in Zhuhai, Guangdong and Macao have set up the Guangdong-Macao Co-operation Industrial Park covering five square kilometres, focusing on the development of traditional Chinese medicine, the cultural and creative industry, education and training.

The Vetting Committee for Macao Projects in Hengqin Development under IPIM was set up by the Macao SAR government. Members include representatives from different sectors and government officials. It aims to assess and select investment projects to be set up in the Guangdong-Macao Co-operation Industrial Park covering 4.5 square kilometres.

The submission period for investment projects starts on 1 August and lasts until 31 October. Priority will be given to application projects which can fulfil any of the seven criteria. Individual applicant/applicant enterprises possess the capacity to operate and have experience in the business concerned; or that the nature of the investment project is beneficial to Macao’s moderate economic diversification, or the application project can encourage the participation of Macao SMEs, or is beneficialto Macao’s development as a World Tourism and Leisure Centre, or can help to enhance Macao’s role as a trade and business service platform, orprovides Macao residents’ with employment in Hengqin.

Being the first project of the Guangdong-Macao Co-operationIndustrial Park, with an area of 0.5 square kilo metres, the Guangdong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Technology Industrial Park project was started in April 2011. The Hengqin campus of the University of Macau covering 1.09 square kilo metres was opened on 20 July.

2013 GUANGDONG AND MACAO BRANDEDPRODUCTS FAIR FOSTERS CLOSE TRADE ANDECONOMIC TIES

Following the continued strengthening of Guangdong-Macao cooperation,the convention and exhibition industry, a major collaboration project between the two, has been constantly developing. Since itsinception in 2009, the annual Guangdong and Macao Branded Products Fair (GMBPF) has been enriched with new elements every year toenhance its appeal.

The Guangdong-Macao Branded Products Fair, co-hosted by IPIMand the Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation ofGuangdong Province, was held from 1 to 4 August at the Fisherman’sWharf Convention and Exhibition Centre. Officiating guests at theopening ceremony included Vice Governor Zhao Yufang of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Secretary for Economy and Finance Tam Pak Yuen of the Macao SAR, Deputy Director General Qiu Hong of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Director-General Huang Hangqian of Department of General Affairs of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR,Director Guo Yuanqiang of Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation of Guangdong Province, President Jackson Chang of Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, President Ma Iao Laiof Macau Chamber of Commerce, Deputy Director Lu Xingzhou of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Deputy Mayor Du Minqi of Meizhou Municipal People’s Government, Deputy Mayor Wang Sheng of Huizhou Municipal People’s Government, Deputy Mayor Feng Yurong of Zhongshan MunicipalPeople’s Government, Deputy Mayor Wu Guojie of Jiangmen MunicipalPeople’s Government, Deputy Mayor Li Rifang of Yangjiang MunicipalPeople’s Government, Deputy Mayor Liang Luoyue of MaomingMunicipal People’s Government, Deputy Mayor Chen Xuanqun of Zhaoqing Municipal People’s Government and Deputy Mayor HuangZhihao of Yunfu Municipal People’s Government.

This year’s GMBPF occupied a total of 6,000 square metres, divided into the Guangdong and Macao Exhibition Zones. Diverse products were available for sale including daily necessities, food products, electronics as well as arts and crafts. Guangdong electronics and information technology products were introduced this year with the aim of attracting more people for procurement and business matching. There were 210participating enterprises in 269 exhibition booths. There were 123enterprises from Guangdong, coming from 19 prefecture-level cities,setting up a total of 182 exhibition booths and Macao enterprises setup 87 booths.

The four-day event recorded a total of 137,600 visitors and the sales volume was similar to that of last year. The Guangdong-Macao Convention, Exhibition and Logistics Co-operation and Development Forum as well as 13 professional promotion seminars were also held. GMBPF concluded the signing of 17 projects involving Procurement of Fishing Articles, Procurement of Articles for Daily Use, Production of Macao Branded Chocolate Products and Procurement of Local Specialties and Rice. During the event, a total of 966 business matching sessions were conducted, up 11% year-on-year. Enterprises participating in the business matching sessions were mainly from Guangdong Province(including Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Shantou,Shenzhen, Yangjiang, Zhanjiang, Zhoushan and Zhuhai), Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan. The contents included foodstuff, daily necessities, household appliances, clothing, toys and children’s products.

FOUR CONCURRENT EVENTS JOINED TOP REMOTE INTERACTION AND ACHIEVE FAVOURABLE RESULTS

During the 2013 GMBPF, three events with IPIM as the supporting or ganisation were held concurrently, namely the “China Continental -Taiwan – Macau – Fine Food Show 2013”, “Macau International Beer Festival 2013 – 2nd Beer, Wine & Spirits Expo” and “Asian Wedding Celebration Expo”. The four concurrent events joined to promote interaction and attract customers, enabling Macao residents and tourists to experience the vibrant and lively atmosphere of these events and brought together the elements of shopping, leisure, wedding celebration and entertainment to Macao.

Next year will mark the sixth anniversary of GMBPF; the event has been tentatively scheduled for 31 July to 3 August 2014. The organizer will actively promote collaboration and exchanges between the two places and further expand the marketing of branded products from Guangdong and Macao through the trade fair channels and create more business opportunities for enterprises on both sides, as well as utilising Macao’s strengths and roles as a World Tourism and Leisure Centre and a trade business service platform.
