Overall Economic Situation

Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, commonly abbreviated toGui, is located in Southern China. It borders Guangdong province in theeast, Yunnan province in the west and covers a total land area of 236,700square metres. The total population of the region is 51.6 million as ofNovember 2010. The province, rich in mineral resources, particularlyferrous metals such as aluminium and tin, is one of the ten major ferrousmetal producing areas in the country.

In 2010, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region’s GDP amounted toUS$950.239 billion, showing an increase of 14.2 % year on year. Theadded value of primary industry was US$167.37 billion, up by 4.6%, thatof secondary industry was valued at US$451.83 billion; an increase of20.5%, hat of tertiary industry was US$332.119 billion, a growth of 11.1%.Other modern service industries such as logistics, finance, informationtechnology, convention and exhibition are undergoing rapid development.

In 2010, the total import and export of goods was valued at US$17.706billion, showing a rise of 24.3% when compared to the previous year.Among which, exports were valued at US$9.61 billion, up by 14.8% andimports US$8.96, up by 37.8%.

The China-ASEAN Expo has been held in Nanning, Guangxi sinceit was first organised in 2004. Since the establishment and operation ofthe China-ASEAN free trade zone in 2010, expedited the developmentof bilateral investment and trade. Trade in China-ASEAN commoditieshave been greatly accelerated through the implementation of zero-tariffpolicy, balanced relations between China and ASEAN countries, as wellas the weakening neighbourhood markets.

Business Opportunities

Industries
The added value of all industries amounted to US$386.46 billion,a 20.4% increase compared to the previous year. Added value of verylarge industries amounted to US$300.993 billion, up by 23.7%. Majorindustries include food, vehicles, petrochemical, electricity, ferrousmetal, metallurgy, machinery, construction materials, papermaking,timber processing, electronic information, pharmaceutical, textile,clothing and leather goods, biology, shipwright and marine engineeringsupplies.

Emerging Industries
Guangxi has been actively developing emerging industries such asenergy-saving and environmentally-friendly, equipment manufacturing,bioindustry, new energy vehicles, new materials, new energy, healthcare,new generation of information technology. It has attached greatimportance in nurturing new growth areas in the economy and graduallydeveloping them into pillar industries.

Agriculture
Guangxi is located in the sub-tropical zone, with a warm, humidclimate and abundant sunshine which are beneficial to the growth ofcrops. Major production includes sugar cane, silkworm cocoons, cassava,fast-growing forests, star anise, rice, bananas, tangerines, vegetables,mushrooms and Chinese medicine. The total production of food cropsamounted to 14.12 million tones in 2010.

Tourism
Guangxi is famous for its beautiful rivers and mountains, rich ethnicheritage and abundant tourism resources. In 2010, incoming visitorstotalled 2.524 million, up by 19.2%. Revenue from intentional tourism(foreign exchange) amounted to US$807 million, an increase of 25.5%.There were 140.735 million domestic tourists, up by 19.2%, revenue fromdomestic tourism totalled US$89.81 billion, showing a rise of 36.7%.Total revenue in tourism amounted to US$95.295 billion, a rise of 35.95%.

Bilateral Trade and EconomicLiaisons Between Macao and Guangxi

As in foreign trade, import and export volume in 2010 betweenGuangxi and Macao amounted to US$21 million, an increase of 35.9%year-on-year. From January to July 2011, foreign trade between Guangxiand Macao totalled US$17 million, showing 103% growth year-onyear.Regarding Macao’s investment in Guangxi, 324 foreign-investedenterprises had been set up by Macao companies as of July 2011, withan actual invested capital of US$350 million, and ranks eighth amongall sources of foreign capital in the province. Guangxi has set up threeenterprises in Macao with an investment equivalent to US$2.27 million.
