Green Economy–New Engine For Growth 2012 MIECF- Building A Regional Green Co-Operation Platform

In recent years, there has been increasing awareness in environmental protection around the world, more and more countries and regions are promoting the development of green industry. The Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (MIECF) has been successfully held in Macao for five consecutive years since its inception in 2008 and was awarded the UFI Approved Event Status in November 2011. MIECF has been constantly improving and developing and demonstrates that it is gradually becoming a major green co-operation and development platform for the green industry in the Pan-PRD region.

2012 MIECF, hosted by the Macao SAR Government, was held at the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel from 29 to 31 March. During the three-day event, there were over 8,500 visitors of which more than 6,400 were professionals. This year’s MIECF focused on the development trends in the international green industry, as well as being in line with Macao’s role as a world tourism and leisure centre and low carbon city, plus encouraging the development of green commerce, technology and economy through a unique platform.

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Chui Sai On, Chief Executive of the Macao SAR, Wan Gang, Vice Chairman of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, Gao Yan, Deputy Director of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR, Zhang Jinfeng, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao, Yu Laishan, Executive Vice Governor of Hunan Province, Xu Ruisheng, Vice-Governor of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Li Kang, Vice Chairman of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Mu Degui, Vice Governor of Guizhou Province, Kong Chuizhui, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Yunnan Province, Zhang Dongsheng,Deputy Chairman of the Standing Committee of People’s Congress of Sichuan Province, Edward Yau Secretary for the Environment Bureau of Hong Kong, Zhao Penggao, Deputy Director General, Department of Resources Conservation and Environment Protection, National development and Reform Commission of the PRC, representing Xie Zhenhua, Vice Chairman of National Development and Reform Commission of the PRC, Song Xiaozhi, Deputy Director General of Department of International Co-operation and Deputy Director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs, Ministry of Environmental Protection of the PRC, representing Zhou Shengxian, Minister of Environmental Protection of the PRC, Tam Pak Yuen, Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macao SAR, Lau Si Io, Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Lin Yibiao, Deputy Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Fujian Province, Deng Xingming, Director of the Environmental Protection Office of Jiangxi, Chen Jianchun, Director of Land and Environment Department of Hainan Province and Liu Fenghua, Deputy Secretary General of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

Fostering Green Business Co-operation

The theme for this year was “Green Economy- New Engine for Growth”, advocating the spirit of “Thinking Green, Going Clean and Living Cool”. The organiser received 703 green projects from over 20 countries and regions, showing an increase of 13% year on year and completed 702 businessmatching sessions, a rise of 22.3% compared to last year. Among which, 362 sessions were green hotel procurement negotiations, as well as 92 business matching sessions participated in by government agencies, with nine local government departments involved in procurement matching. A total of 21 local hotels were invited to take part in Green Hotel Matching. During the three-day event, 35 projects were signed, showing a 13% increase. Among which, 62% signatories come from Macao, with other signatories from Brazil, Hong Kong, Mainland China and the Netherlands.Signed projects covered products and services involving various industries including environmental technology co-operation, waste recycling, manufacturing, market and agencies for environmentally-friendly and energy saving products, energy efficiency projects, electric vehicles modification, ecotourism, education and training. It is a strong demonstration of MIECF’s role as a networking and communication platform for neighbouring,regional and international green industries.

Increased International Participation and Exposure of The Event

Regarding the Green Showcase, the event attracted the participation of 398 exhibitors from 28 countries and regions around the world, a rise of 20% as compared to last year.Cambodia, Ireland, Nigeria and Thailand, were first-time participants in MIECF. A number of world-renowned enterprises brought with them innovative environmental products and technologies and enabled industry operators to explore new trends in the international markets through green platform.

The venue covered a total area of 16,911 square metres, slightly more than the 16,511 square metres of last year. Areas covered by the exhibition included energy efficiency,renewable energy, e-mobility, green building,waste and water management solutions. The Green Showcase includes the Pan-PRD Region Exhibition Zone, European Pavilion, USA Zone, International Exhibition Zone, Macao Exhibition Zone and Distinguished Exhibitors Zone, to promote the latest environmental technology.

Green Forum Inspired Green Thinking For Development

A total of six forums were held this year including the “Green Business Forum”, “Why Green Buildings are Key Players in Developing Sustainable Environments”, “Green Finance and Green Investment/Risk Management”, Environmental Policy and Low Carbon Economic Development, Techniques and Equipment for Environmental Industry: Business opportunities and the Green Chemical Forum – Energy Conservation and Efficiency. Thematic speeches were given by 55 speakers and moderators from 14 countries and regions including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Macao, Mainland China, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom. The speeches were based on the green economy with in-depth discussions on various areas such as green building, green finance, investment, risk management and environmental policy. The forums were attended by around 1,200.

The Green Business Co-operation Day held on the first day of MIECF included a series of activities such as a green business forum, networking cocktail and contract signing ceremony.Experts and leaders of renowned international enterprises were invited to conduct panel discussions on energy efficiency and e-mobility and share information on market development. A total of 15 contracts were signed at the networking cocktail and contract-signing ceremony. Over 260 representatives from governments, green industry, commerce and industrial sectors in Mainland China (particularly Pan-PRD region), the EU, Macao, Hong Kong and South-East Asia attended the Green Business Forum.

The Green Public Day on the last day of the event recorded over 2,000 visitors. As in last year, a series of activities for parents and children were organised to spread the green message in interesting ways and encouraged the general public to make wise use of resources and start environmentallyfriendly habits in their daily lives. Special on-site guided tours were provided to introduce MIECF principles, exhibition zones and their features. Test drives of electric vehicles were also organised to enable the public to personally experience the features of the vehicles.

The 2013 MIECF will be held from 21 to 23 March 2013. All from the local and overseas commercial, industrial and green sectors are welcome to participate and support the event and promote green industry development in Macao.
