Agriculture, fishery co-operation

“As a high-tech seed group in the Mainland, Longping Hi-Tech has played an active role in ‘going global’,” said Long Ping Hi- Tech East Timor Agriculture Development Co. Ltd. Director Liu Zhixian. “In line with the outcomes of the 2nd Ministerial Conference of Forum Macao, the company has, since January 2008, worked hard to comply with the Central Government’s goal to provide assistance to East Timor in implementing a hybrid rice technology project, thus establishing a business contact with one of the Portuguese-speaking Countries,” she told the sharing session.

The company has been working in East Timor since January 2008, promoting leading agricultural technologies such as cultivation of high-quality rice and corn. The company cooperates with other Mainland China enterprises on chilli cultivation and seawater shrimp farming, which contribute towards the promotion of economic development in East Timor.

The representative of Longping Hi-Tech and General Manager of Zhuhai Deguang Zhuo Huifen said the support of the Central Government had seen the company co-operate with several organisations on aquaculture projects in 2016, including the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, IPIM and East Timor’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The company has also co-operated with East Timor’s fisheries officials to invest in and develop eight shrimp ponds across 32 hectares. The ponds produce 40 tonnes of shrimp annually and have become a breeding base for Pacific white shrimp. The government of East Timor has closely followed the project, as it will become an important industry that contributes to the country’s exports and provide food for residents to remedy the insufficient supply of protein in the community.

In addition, East Timor has a wealth of organic agricultural resources, including organic coffee, Eucalyptus honey and tropical fruit. Longping Hi-Tech took the opportunity to participate in the Agriculture Fair for Six Provinces of Central China in Changsha, Hunan province, in December 2016, to introduce some of these organic agricultural products to the Chinese market.

Generating employment

Huawei’s Vice-Director of Government Affairs, Chen Nan, shared the company’s experience of doing business in Portugal. Portugal was one of the first European countries in which Huawei expanded its business. The company set up its Portugal office in 2003, but it also does business in other Portuguesespeaking Countries, including Angola, Brazil and Mozambique.

Among the insights he shared, Mr Chen offered a few suggestions, including that, regardless the size of the company, enterprises should focus on establishing a longterm relationship with the community while investing in Portuguese-speaking Countries. In developing a long-term and stable business in Portugal, Mr Chen said it was important to be a responsible corporate citizen who ensures the security and sustainability of communication with operators and customers.

Huawei’s investment and development has directly created nearly 100 jobs in Portugal and indirectly created another 200 jobs in their suppliers and partners. Huawei has also helped train Portuguese professionals in information and development and modernisation of industry, to which Huawei has been invited to participate. Mr Chen said the company would work with the government and other enterprises to contribute to the programme and help develop Portugal’s economy.

Huawei has also co-operated with businesses in Angola and Mozambique to provide training and job opportunities. Mr Chen said that local residents comprise about 70 percent of Huawei’s staff in these countries.
