2014 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition Energising Green Business Growth to Promote Networking and Co-operation of Environmental Industry

The “2014 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition” (2014 MIECF) was held from 27 to 29 March. The three-day event was participated in by 9,245 visitors, completed nearly 800 business matching sessions and witnessed the signing of 26 projects. The event covered a series of activities including Green Forum, Green Showcase, Environmental Industry Networking Meeting, Seminars and Presentations, Green Public Day, aiming to fully utilise its role as a green platform and promote the growth and technological development of local environmental industry.

Greater international exposure and participation of 2014 MIECF
2014 MIECF was hosted by the Macao SAR Government, with Special Supporting Organisations including the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, with co-organisers including the governments of the Pan-Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Provinces and regions and the Host Co-ordinators Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and the Environmental Protection Bureau. The theme this year was Energising Green Business Growth, promoting the principle of Thinking Green, Going Clean and Living Cool.

Officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Chief Executive of Macao SAR Chui Sai On, Deputy Director General of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR Qiu Hong, Deputy Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC in Macao SAR Feng Tie, Secretary of State of the Environment of Portugal Paulo Lemos, Executive Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Hunan Province Chen Zhaoxiong, Vice Governor of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province Xu Ruisheng, Vice Chairman of the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Huang Ribo, Vice-Chairman of Yunnan People’s Political Consultative Committee Luo Lihui, Secretary for the Environment of Environment Bureau of Hong Kong SAR Wong Kamsing, Deputy Inspector of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environmental Protection of the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China Feng Liang, representing Deputy Director Xie Zhenhua of NDRC, Deputy Director of Department of International Co-operation and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office Tu Ruihe, representing Minister Zhou Shengxian of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macao SAR Tam Pak Yuen, Secretary for Transport and Public Works of Macao SAR Lau Si Io, Vice Secretary General of the People’s Government of Guizhou Province Wu Qiang, Director of the Environmental Protection Department of Sichuan Province Jiang Xiaoting, Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Department of Fujian Province Yu Heping, Deputy Director of the Department of Land Environment and Resources of Hainan Province Liao Zhengwei, Chief Engineer of the Environmental Protection Department of Jiangxi Province Shi Jing as well as recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics, Senior Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, Honorary Doctor of Social Science of University of Macau and Professor of the University of Columbia Joseph Stiglitz.

Chief Executive Chui Sai On gave a welcome speech at the opening ceremony, plus three keynote speeches respectively by Feng Liang, Tu Ruihe and Paulo Lemos as well as a thematic speech by Joseph Stiglitz.

Business Matching Sessions to Promote Collaboration
During the three-day event, nearly 800 business matching sessions were held (this number does not include business discussions at the venue between exhibitors and participants). The figure included business matching negotiations for hotels as well as government departments. Countries and regions involved in the business negotiations included Mainland China, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Macao, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore and Taiwan. The discussions involved environmentally friendly hotel supplies, co-operation in solid waste recycling projects, indoor air purification, LED energy-saving lamps, technological co-operation in sewage treatment, vertical planting techniques, green building materials, waste recycling solutions as well as wastewater management.Several Environmental Industry Networking Meetings were also held during 2014 MIECF.

During the three-day event, a total of 26 contracts were signed, the signatories came from Mainland China (for example Beijing as well as the municipalities of Jiangmen, Zhuhai and Shenzhen in Guangdong province), Hong Kong, Italy, Macao, and Taiwan involving the following industries: environmental protection, construction and engineering, information exchange, education, co-operation in environmental technology as well as product agents. The projects involved environmental technology collaboration and information exchange, co-operation in the setting-up of an international-level base for the quality control of Traditional Chinese Medicine and trade platform for the healthcare industry, kitchen waste recovery and recycling, environmental co-operation projects, energy projects, sale of and agent for environmental products as well as environmental education.

Green Showcase Creates Enormous Business Opportunities
The venue covered an area of over 16,000 square metres, encompassing six major areas, namely, energy efficiency, renewable energies, green building, green mobility, solutions for waste treatment and water treatment, and environmental services. Four pavilions were set up for the first time this year, namely, the China Environmental Protection Industry Pavilion, Guangdong Municipal Waste Treatment Industry Association Pavilion, Foshan Pavilion and the Hsinchu County (Taiwan) Pavilion, showed environmental technology and products in these areas. The Green Showcase was participated in by around 400 exhibitors from 20 different countries and regions. “The MICE Through-train Service”, organised in collaboration with the organisations of the environmental industry of Guangdong province, was again available this year, to facilitate the participation of professionals from the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region in MIECFrelated activities. The service was widely used.

Business-matching and negociating section at 2014 MIECF

International Professionals Participate in the Green Forum
Nine forums were held, including seven forum sessions and two seminars, with the participation of 58 experts and academics from 12 countries and regions. Speakers shared their valuable insights on several environmental issues and further elevated the event to an international level.

For the first time, IPIM worked with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Asia Pacific Travel Association (PATA) and organised two seminars to discuss topics in the environmental field, namely, “Ecological Civilisation and the Development of Low-carbon Economy” and “Corporate Social Responsibility and the Visitor Economy”, highlighting Macao’s challenges and opportunities during its social development.

The last day of MIECF was designated as the Green Public Day with the theme of “Reduce the Use of Plastic Bags to Make Our City Greener”. A range of themed games for parents and their children including environmental workshops and game booths giving them the opportunity to enjoy the occasion and at the same time learn about the latest developments in environmental protection.

2015 MIECF will be held from 26 to 28 March next year.
