IPIM Organises Macao Legal and Arbitration Experts to Visit Brazil for Exchange and Co-operation

The Macao delegation visits the Ceará Branch of the Brazilian Bar Association

IPIM, Macao Lawyers Association and the World Trade Centre Macau Arbitration Centre jointly organised a delegation of nearly 30 legal and arbitration experts to visit Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil from 18 to 22 November, in a bid to open up possibilities of co-operation with their Brazilian counterparts.

During the trip, the delegation paid visit to Ceará’s Ministry of Economic Development and Labour Affairs, Ceará Branch of the Brazilian Bar Association, Ceará’s industrial alliance, Government of Rio de Janeiro, Consulate General of China in Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro Branch of the Brazilian Bar Association, a startup project in Rio de Janeiro – Fábrica de Startups – and some of the arbitration-related organisations. In addition, IPIM held networking and exchange activities in both places and invited local legal and arbitration representatives to these events and meet with the Macao delegation.

During their visit, Mrs Irene Va Kuan Lau, President of IPIM introduced the latest developments of China-Brazil commercial and investment co-operation. Mr Joaquim Jorge Neto Valente, President of Macao Lawyers Association also introduced the legal systems of China and Macao, and how the Macao legal sector contributes to the development of the “Belt and Road” Initiative. Ms Emília da Conceição Cardoso dos Santos, Legal expert of the Legal Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR shared some of the information of Macao’s current arbitration and meditation systems. Ms Vong Sok Hei, Secretary-General of the World Trade Centre Macau Arbitration Centre gave an introduction of how the centre promotes arbitration in Macao.

Two co-operation agreements were inked during the trip, including one that aims at furthering information exchange, arbitration and meditation. The documents were signed by the Macao Lawyers Association, the Ceará Branch and the Rio de Janeiro Branch of the Brazilian Bar Association; the other agreement was signed by the Macao SAR Government Consumer Council and the Brazilian Institute of Consumer, in an effort to build a better case transferal mechanism for both sides.
