The process of selection of companies that will build the electrical substations included in the Temane-Maputo transmission line project, with an output of 400 Kilovolts, began formally on Wednesday, 1 April, Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported.

This international public tender, which has World Bank financing, is divided into three lots, which cover the substations of Vilanculos in Inhambane province, Chibuto in Gaza province and Matalane, in Maputo, in addition to the expansion of the substation of Maputo, located in the district of Boane, all in southern Mozambique.

A source from the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy told the newspaper on Tuesday that last February the Vilanculos-Chibuto line lots were launched, with a length of 340 kilometres, long with Chibuto-Matalane (180 km) and Matalane-Boane, the shortest at 43 kilometres.

The three sections of the line have financial support from the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), and that the deadline for the submission of tenders ends on 28 April.

In turn, the tender for the substations closes on 25 May 2020, the date on which the analysis phase of the proposals for the subsequent award is due to begin.

The Temane-Maputo transmission line project is crucial for the transmission of electricity in the country as it is the first of the so-called “backbone”, which will connect the power production centre, Tete, and the biggest area of consumption, the city and province of Maputo.

The government has already secured funding from development partners, of around US$550 million for the project, which will go into operation at the end of 2023, along with the Temane Thermoelectric Power Plant, which will provide 400 megawatts of electricity.
