The African Development Bank (AfdB) plans to donate US$34 million to lay asphalt on the road between Nambungali and Roma in Mozambique, over a distance of 35 kilometres, under a document signed with the government of the country, the financial institution said.

The announcement from the AfDB said that the work is part of the second phase of the Mueda-Negomano Road Project, to improve transport infrastructure between Mozambique and Tanzania and added that the donation was signed by the Mozambican Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, and by a representative of the institution in the country, Pietro Toigo.

The AfDB believes that the successful conclusion of the work on this project will boost the impact of the Unity Bridge, inaugurated in May 2010, in significantly reducing travel time to the ports of Pemba, Mozambique, and Mtwara, Tanzania, “and will, likewise, boost regional trade and integration between the two countries.”

The project for the construction of this section of road will be complemented by additional work to increase its impact on social inclusion, with an additional investment of US$2 million in community markets, clinics and other social facilities.

The statement added that the Mozambican government would contribute US$536,000, mainly for the resettlement and compensation of people residing in locations covered by the project.
