The Cuamba – Marrupa power transmission line and the Marrupa substation, in Niassa province, northern Mozambique, were recently inaugurated by President Filipe Nyusi, the local press reported.

The project is part of a wider plan to increase the quality of energy supply in Niassa and surrounding areas, costing some US$54.5 million funded by the government and partners.

The Cuamba-Marrupa 110-kilovolt line and Marrupa substation will improve the quality of transmission and distribution of electricity, to respond to long-term demand, as well as improving access to electricity, reliability and quality of supply to both existing and potential consumers in Niassa province and surrounding areas.

Before the completion of the new transmission line, which is 240 kilometres long, the connection between these two points of the province was provided by a 33 kV medium voltage line, which made it impossible to design and implement socio-economic development programmes.

State power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM), by 25 September will install 25,000 new connections in Niassa province, where just 24.73% of the population has access to electricity.

Nyusi said in his speech that the next goal, once the electrification of all the district capitals in the country is completed, will be to complete the electrification of 446 administrative posts, of which only 116 remain to be linked to the power grid.
