Studies on the model to be adopted for the concession of Luanda’s light rail system have been completed, Transport Minister Ricardo de Abreu said on Wednesday.

The minister said that the relevant departments of the ministry responsible are currently consulting other agencies of the central government and the provincial government of Luanda in order to move on to the project implementation phase, according to the Angop news agency.

Ricardo de Abreu said Luanda’s light rail system was an important project to facilitate the mobility of people and added that a solution to the problem of public transport in the country, particularly in the capital, was to articulate rail and road transport systems.

He also said that the various types of transport should complement each other, becoming a single well-organised system including light rail, buses, individual and collective taxis and motorbikes, thereby ensuring people’s mobility.

The Transport Minister also said that he expected this project to be approved in 2019, in order to launch the Luanda Metro Entity, which will be a public-private partnership.
