The project to modernise and expand São Tomé international airport is moving ahead and the feasibility of building a port is being analysed, the Chinese ambassador to São Tome and Príncipe Weng Wei said on Friday.

Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang received his São Tomé counterpart last March in Boao, Hainan province, and he expressed his country’s willingness to finance those two projects as well as to support the State Budget of the archipelago for 2019.

The ambassador of China, who was also delivering 46 more vehicles to the archipelago’s government, represented by Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus, said that these vehicles, which include 40 mini-buses, four SUVs and two open vans all of the Foton brand, are a donation to the archipelago under bilateral cooperation.

Most cars are intended for São Tomé taxi drivers under repayable loans, while the remainder will be distributed among some public sectors of the central administration of the São Tomé state.

The central government of São Tomé and Príncipe last Thursday delivered six vehicles, three vans and three off-road vehicles to the regional government of Príncipe Island, which had been donated by China.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus said that “the six vehicles are the result of a donation from China as part of bilateral cooperation with a view to sustainable development” of the archipelago.
