The meeting of the Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply with the Chinese authorities on Thursday in Beijing partially failed in its aims, with the number of cold stores authorised to export meat to China kept unchanged, the Brazilian press reported.

The Valor Econômico newspaper reported that the meeting with China’s General Customs Administration had been expected to result in the immediate approval of more cold stores to export beef, but this not happen, according to the sources contacted by the newspaper.

The Chinese government recently announced it intended to expand the list of Brazilian cold storage warehouses approved for export, with a consensus that those already exporting to the European Union countries, a very demanding market in sanitary standards, would be approved quickly.

The newspaper also wrote that the meeting was not a complete failure as Minister Tereza Cristina Corrêa had reached an agreement to establish standards for the approval of cold stores authorised to export to China.

Brazil is seeking approval for more than 70 cold stores to export beef, pork and chicken to China, which in turn intends to export fish to Brazil.

The visit by the Minister of Agriculture marked the opening of the trade and diplomatic talks of the Brazilian government with the Chinese authorities.

Vice President Hamilton Mourão will visit China next week to attend the meeting of the Sino-Brazilian High-Level Coordination and Co-operation Commission (COSBAN) and President Jair Bolsonaro has a trip scheduled in June.
