A train reserved for general cargo transport last Sunday travelled along the route between Cuamba and Lichinga, in Niassa province, northern Mozambique, said the commercial manager of the Northern Development Corridor (CDN).

Dario Viegas, quoted by Mozambican state news agency AIM, also said that this train, which travels along the route once a week, is intended to carry a variety of products between the two cities in Niassa, thus boosting the production and productivity potential of that northern region of the country.

“After the recovery of the Cuamba-Lichinga section, our company introduced the freight service that has benefited the economic growth of the province of Niassa and, given the significant increase in demand, a decision was made to increase the freight service,” said the commercial manager of CDN.

The 162-kilometre Cuamba-Lichinga section of railway was inaugurated by the President of the Republic in November 2016 to improve the flow of agricultural products from Niassa province to the entire northern region, as well as to boost commercial transactions between the northern provinces of and neighbouring inland countries.

The Northern Development Corridor is a US$4.5 billion investment that brings together Brazilian multinational Vale, Japanese conglomerate Mitsui and the public port and rail company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), linking the port of Nacala with the northern rail system and linking people from the coast and interior of northern Mozambique and neighbouring countries.
