MARKET BRIEFING – EAST TIMOR
The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste or East Timor is a nation in Southeast Asia, that is situated in the eastern half of the island of Timor. Until 1999 it was, following UN intervention, administered by Indonesia when a referendum was held to determine its independence. This resulted in a 78% vote in favour of independence, which was achieved on 20 May 2002.
The island of Timor is part of the Indonesian archipelago and the largest and easternmost of the Lesser Sunda Islands. The climate is tropical and generally hot and humid, characterised by distinct rainy and dry seasons. The population is predominantly Roman Catholic (90%), most of which are of Malayo-Polynesian descent (78%), while those of Filipino extraction account for (20%) and a small ethnic Chinese minority (2%).
East Timor is rich in gold, petroleum, manganese, marble and natural gas resources and the main industries are printing, soap manufacturing, handicrafts, and woven cloth. The major port is Dili Harbour and the main airport is Dili International Airport.
