[2020-03-16] Construction of the port of Macuse in Mozambique starts in 2021

The construction of the deep-water port of Macuse, in Mozambique’s Zambézia provine, is expected to start in 2021, the president of Mozambique Thai Logistic, Orlando Marques, the concessionaire company of the project announced last week in Quelimane.

In October 2019 the first stone was laid in the Sopinho area for the construction of the village for accommodation of people currently residing in the area of future port of Macuse.

During the ceremony Marques announced that 63 houses, a health centre, a small water supply system, the power grid extended , roads, water holes, a market and playing fields would be built in the village.

The government of Mozambique in 2013 awarded the conecssion of the Macuse port and railroad to Italthai Thai Engineering (which holds 60% of Thai Mozambique Logistics). The port is located 35 kilometres north of Quelimane, the capital of the central province of Zambézia.

The remaining shareholders of Thai Mozambique Logistics are state port and railway company CFM and the Zambézia Development Corridor (Codiza).

The railway line that will connect Macuse to the Moatize and Chitima mines, which will be 620 kilometres long, is budgeted at US$2 billion and has been designed for coal transport from Tete province, in the interior of Mozambique.

The project valued at around US$2.4 billion will be executed by a consortium involving construction companies China Machinery Engineering Corporation and Portugal’s Mota-Engil.
