A blue partnership between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries was under discussion on Thursday at the University of Economics and International Business (UIBE) in Beijing, in a meeting that brought together about 200 people, including experts, academics, diplomats and businesspeople.

China’s first ambassador to the World Trade Organisation and former Chinese Deputy Minister of Trade, Sun Zhenyu, said that in the framework of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau), joint construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, which promotes the use of marine resources and the development of emerging marine industries, will be possible.

The goal, Sun continued, is to accelerate industrialisation and deepen cooperation in productive capacity, by driving cooperation in building infrastructure based on a good relationship.

Guinea-Bissau’s ambassador to China, Malam Sambu, said his country had always regarded China as a priority partner and that he hoped to further deepen mutual benefit cooperation in pursuit of synergies between development strategies.

The event, entitled “Blue Partnership between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries: Strengthening Trade and Investment, Promoting Cooperation in Productive Capacity,” was jointly organised by the Chinese Centre for the Study of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CCEPLP) of UIBE and the International Institute of Macau (IIM).

At the same meeting, the launch ceremony of the Portuguese-speaking Countries Development Report (2017-2018) was held, which focuses on the latest developments in these countries, and serves as a reference for companies’ decision making and investment planning.
