Angolan Minister of Hotels and Tourism, Ângela Bragança, launched the Mbanza Kongo Tourist Guide and Map, at a ceremony held on Monday as part of the celebrations of World Tourism Day, which will be celebrated on Friday, in the city in Zaire province, according to the Angolan press.

The historical centre of Mbanza Kongo, capital of the former Kingdom of Congo, now a World Heritage Site, is one of the highlights of the tourist map.

At a ceremony to launch World Tourism Day festivities, Bragança recalled that the Government considers the tourism sector to be the lever for Angola’s “desired” sustainable development.

According to the minister, the country has a dynamic, concerted and integrated tourism development strategy, focusing on and strengthening the specific vocations of each region in order to create a diversified tourism offer.

Bragança gave assurances that the Government will continue to support private investment projects focused on the restoration and expansion of the hotel network, as well as the construction of infrastructure to support tourism activities.

World Tourism Day was launched on 27 September 1979 during the 3rd session of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (WTO), but its annual celebration only began in 1980.
