The issue of mobility within the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) could be solved later this year during Cabo Verde’s presidency, said the Cape Verdean prime minister on Tuesday.

Ulisses Correia e Silva, who made statements regarding the celebration of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Communities in São Vicente, said that the resolution of the issue will “remove obstacles and barriers” in terms of circulation, not only of Cape Verdeans, but also citizens of the other countries of the community.”

Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa recalled there were some obstacles to the free movement because Portugal is a member of the European Union, in which “no country” can set its own criteria, according to the Inforpress news agency.

However, he said, the heart of the problem is freedom of residence, where each country can set its own parameters, and it is on this point that Portugal is working to find a solution for the CPLP.

The Day of Portugal, Camões and Portuguese Communities, on 10 June, was also celebrated on the island of São Vicente with various activities and with the presence of Cape Verdean and Portuguese officials, including the President and the Prime Minister of Portugal.
