Five large Mozambican state-owned companies are on the list of debtors that will benefit from a tax pardon, said the president of the country’s Tax Authority (TA).

Amélia Nakhare, in an interview with the Mozambican public television channel, said that the five major public companies are Televisão de Moçambique (TVM), Petróleos de Moçambique (Petromoc), Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM) and Moçambique Celular.

The tax pardons, which will benefit an undisclosed number of companies, covers only fines, interest and tax foreclosures.

The president of the AT said that the pardon will not be extended to the net debt of companies, which if it is not paid will lead to tax enforcement.

Nakhare did not specify the total amount of the debt pardon, noting only that in total the AT has accumulated credits of about 9 billion meticals (US$144.5 million).
