MARKET BRIEFING – AUSTRALIA
OVERALL ECONOMIC SITUATION
Australia, located on southern Pacific and the Indian Oceans, is comprised of the mainland of the Australia, islands including Tasmania and other overseas territories. It borders the Coral Sea and Tasman Sea on the Pacific Ocean, and the Indian Ocean to the north, east and south and its marginal sea.
Australia is a latecomer to industrialisation with prosperous development in the agricultural and animal husbandry industry. The country possesses abundant natural resources with a massive supply of sheep, cattle, wheat and cane sugar. It is also one of the major producers and exporter of mineral products. Agriculture and animal husbandry, mining are the traditional industries of Australia. In recent years, manufacturing and high technology industries have been developing rapidly, and the service industry has also become the leading industry in the domestic economy.
Australia possesses an abundance of mineral resources, with over 70 types of mineral reserves. Among which, the detected economic reserves of lead, nickel, silver, uranium, zinc and tantalum rank first in the world. It is also the largest producer of bauxite, aluminium oxide, diamond and tantalum, its production of gold, iron ore, coal, lithium and magnesium ore, nickel, silver, uranium and zinc are also among the highest in the world.

Industries
Australia’s industries are well-developed with major industries including mining, metallurgy, iron and steel, mechanics (mainly mining machines), biochemistry, textiles and clothing, ship building, food and pharmaceutical. Australia is also the world’s largest e exporter of bituminous coal, bauxite, lead, diamonds, zinc and refined ore.
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
The industry is well development with the production of agricultural and animal husbandry products being a vital part in domestic economy. It is the world’s largest exporter of wool and beef with major crops including wheat and barley, cane sugar, cotton, oil-bearing crops, plus beef and lamb and dairy products.
Service Industry
The service industry is the most important and fastest growing component of Australia’s economy. After 30 years of economic structural adjustment, it has become the mainstay industry.
Tourism
There been growing numbers of overseas visitors in recent years, but domestic visitors are still the pillar of the tourism industry. Australia has an abundance of tourism resources with world-renowned tourism cities and attractions including Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Ayers Rock, the Great Barrier Reef and the Gold Coast.
