Those Lovely Portuguese Goodies
Located at the western end of the European continent, Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe. Its rich history, beautiful natural landscape and distinctive architecture have made it one of the best destinations in Europe by the !’World Travel Awards!( for four consecutive years. Talking about travel, the souvenirs are something you should never miss. Today, Portuguese eagle would like to show you some wonderful little goodies from Portugal.
Rooster that symbolises justice and luck
In Portugal, you can see roosters everywhere as the main design element of decorations. Behind this rooster there is a folk tale similar to that of !’Snowing in June!( in Chinese culture. Legend has it that a pilgrim passing through a town called Barcelos in northern Portugal was mistaken for a thief and was sentenced to be hanged. Before the execution, the pilgrim was allowed to see the judge to redress his grievances. However, the judge, who was enjoying his dinner, was unimpressed by the pilgrim’s grievances. Being desperate, the pilgrim shouted !’If the roast chicken on the table also stands up and crows for me, then I am innocent!!( Soon after that the roast chicken miraculously stood up from the plate and crowed. This miracle made the judge realise his mistake and he ordered that the pilgrim be freed. The rooster has since then become a symbol of justice and good fortune in Portugal and has become the country’s mascot.
Cork handicraft filled with creativity
Cork is the bark of the cork oak, a pure natural material that can be recycled. When we think of cork, we often think of the cork in wine bottles, but the use of cork is far more than this. Portugal is the world’s largest producer of cork and is known as the !’Kingdom of Cork!(. At the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the facade of the Portuguese pavilion was made of cork.
Moreover, the creative Portuguese people have used cork as the main material to design and produce beautiful handicrafts for daily life such as purses, cork tile paintings and coasters.
Aromatic traditional Portuguese soaps
Portuguess handmade soap made with traditional craftsmanship, have been made in Porto, a coastal city in northern Portugal, for hundreds of years.Today, many visitors who visit Portugal love to leave with a bar of traditional Portuguese soap in a charmingly scented, vintage package.
After hearing so many fascinating stories, do you want to own one or more of these nice goodies full of Portuguese characteristics? Although you cannot visit Portugal due to the pandemic situation, Portuguese eagle has found you some ways to see and buy these goodies. Since it was launched, the “China-PSC Portal” is dedicated to providing information on China and Portuguese speaking Countries (PSCs), a food and non-food product database, bilingual talent database, professional service providers database, information on MICE events in China and the PSCs, information on investment projects in China and PSCs, investment guides and laws and regulations in PSCs, research on co-operation, as well as economic and trade information.
