2013 MIECF SUSTAINABLE CITIES – THE WAY TOWARDS A GREEN FUTURE

Hosted by the Macao SAR government, with special supporting or ganisations including National Development and ReformCommission(NDRC), Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, co-organisers including the People’s Governments of Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan,Sichuan, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, Guangxi Zhuang AutonomousRegion and Hong Kong SAR government, with IPIM and the Macao Environmental Protection Bureau as the host co-ordinators, the 2013MIECF was held at Macao Venetian Convention and Exhibition Centrefrom 21 to 23 March. The event was participated in by over 10,100people, a rise of 19.8% when compared to the previous year. Professional representatives totalled over 6,800, and 846 business-matching sessions were completed, an increase of 20.51% compared to last year. A total of41 projects were signed, a rise of 17.1% year on year.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, the Chief Executive ChuiSai On said that this is the sixth year of MIECF since its inception in2008. The event has become a vital platform to link the Pan-Pearl River Delta (PRD) region and international environmental industry. Currently,the SAR government has identified building a low carbon Macao and developing green life style as the first stage of its environmental protection aspiration. The government will actively promote sustainable development, developing a good and desirable living environment and enhancing the quality of the environment, promoting environmental policy and related work.

Thematic speeches were given by various speakers at the opening ceremony, including Wang Weizhong, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Li Jing, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Resource Conservation and Environment Protection of NDRC, representing Deputy Director Xie Zhenhua of NDRC, and Jiang Wei, Deputy Director of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, representing Minister Zhou Shengxian of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Wang Xiaokang, Member of the 12th National Committee of CPPCC and Chairman of the Board of China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group.

Two world renowned academics gave keynote speeches, namely Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Special Advisor to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Professor Sachs is very active in international environmental fields and is also known as “probably the most important economist in the world” and “the world’s best-known economist”. The other reputable speaker is Professor Jiang Jiasi, Chairman of Sustainable Development Technology Foundation and Founding Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences at Peking University.

INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLATFORM

The theme for this year is Sustainable Cities – The Way Towards A Green Future. It aimed to showcase Macao’s role as a green platform between China and the rest of the world through a Green Forum, Green Showcase, Green Business Matching, Green Public Day and technical visits.

The Green Showcase covered six areas namely energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building, green mobility, waste and water management solutions and environmental services. The exhibition area covered 16,000 square metres, attracting more than 400 exhibitors from over 20 countries and regions including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, mainland China, Portuguese-speaking countries, Taiwan and the United States.

The three-day event attracted over 10,100 participants, an increase of 19.8% year on year. Professional representatives totalled over 6,800 and completed 846 business matching sessions, a rise of 20.51% as compared to the previous year. Among which 405 sessions were green hotel procurement negotiations, 99 sessions were government department procurement matching sessions, 86 sessions involved Portuguese-speaking countries, amounting to 10.2%. A total of 752 environmental investment and product agency projects were received this year, a rise of 7% year on year. This year, 41 projects were signed, showing an increase of 17.1% year on year, among which, 44.8% originate from Macao while the remaining projects involve companies from France, Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and the United States, involving products and services in various sectors including environmental technology co-operation, waste recycling, manufacturing and marketing of environmental and energy saving products, environmental education. The Green Showcase highlighted MIECF’s role as a green networking platform.

GREEN FORUMGATHERED WORLD RENOWNED PROFESSIONALS

This year’s MIECF organised nine forums and two workshops which were attended by 2,700 guests. A total of 67 speakers from 13 countries and regions were invited to give speeches focusing on technologies in sustainable urban development, namely energy efficiency, renewable energy, green building, green mobility, waste and water management solutions, sustainable tourism development and environmental policies, to exchange views and share their valuable insights in the related fields.

Sustainable Cities – Policies and Cases, Tracking Trends and Benefits of Sustainable and Green Cities, Fostering Sustainable Practices into Tourism, and Meeting on Integrated Environmental Solutions of the Pan-Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Region are the topics of discussion for this year.

BUILDING ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY PAVILION WITH GREEN MATERIALS

As this year, a number of reusable pavilions in the venue were constructed of recyclable materials. For the first time, the aisles were not carpeted to promote the concept of a green exhibition. According to statistical data, the waste produced by MIECF was reduced from 106 lorry loads in the first year to 26 lorry loads in 2012 and further reduced to less than 20 lorry loads this year.

This year’s MIECF also worked with related associations in Guangdong province to develop the MICE Through-train Service. Professionals in the environmental field in PRD region participated in MIECF and business negotiations in Macao.

The Green Public Day was organised again this year under the theme of Green Consumption as a Lifestyle to promote the concept of developing environmental awareness from childhood, wise use of waste products and recycling unused items. Nearly 3,400 visitors were recorded showing an increase from last year. Nine local schools and organisations arranged for group visits of around 300 participants.

INCREASING IMPACTS OF MIECF

Since its inception, the number of business visitors has increased from over 2,000 in the first MIECF in 2008 to over 6,800 in the 6th MIECF in 2013. The exhibition area has increased from 6,900 square metres to 16, 911 square metres. This year’s MIECF was participated in by over 400 exhibitors from over 20 countries and regions. The three-day event saw 846 business matching sessions and 41 projects signed, highlighting that MIECF has received recognition and support from a growing number of countries and regions, assisting in promoting co-operation and development of Macao’s environmental industry.

2014 MIECF will be held from 27 to 29 March next year.
