Mozambican power company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) has invested 365 million meticais (US$5.5 million) in the construction of two medium and low voltage transmission lines to the areas with potential for tourism development in Nampula province, in the north of the country, daily newspaper Notícias reported.

This move is part of the Strategic Tourism Plan, which provides for an increase in the contribution of this sector to the Gross Domestic Product, by attracting new investments.

The official said that the line is 20 kilometres long, that starts at the Matibane intersection and ends at the administrative post of the same name, along with another that is 25 kilometres long, linking Monapo and Chocas-Mar, both in the coastal district of Mossuril.

The public company believes that this project to expand the national grid marks the beginning of the completion of electrification of 108 administrative posts in the country that still do not have power from the national system.

The President of EdM, Aly Sicola, recently visited the district of Mossuril, Nampula province, to monitor the implementation of the work carried out by the contractor, Tes – Top Engenheiros Técnicos, a Mozambican company specialising in rural electrification.
