[2020-01-10] Diplomat from São Tomé and Príncipe chosen as director-general of the CPLP

São Tomé diplomat Armindo Brito Fernandes, 58 years old and a law graduate, will be the new director-general of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), taking on the position next February for a term of three years, announced the embassy of São Tomé and Príncipe in Portugal.

The announcement describes the choice of Armindo Brito as, “a win for São Tomé diplomacy,” and stresses that the “country has to be represented at a prominent level within the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries.”

The choice of the new director-general of the CPLP resulted from an application process launched by the organisation that brought up 132 candidates, according to the information provided by the São Tomé to the STP-Press news agency.

A career Ambassador in the São Tomé and Príncipe, Armindo Brito Fernandes has had coordination and management duties at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and communities of São Tomé and Príncipe since 2013, with responsibilities in the area of the European Development Fund.

As a diplomat, he was ambassador to Angola, Chargé d’affaires in Belgium and head of diplomatic mission of São Tomé and Príncipe to the European Union.
