Cassinga’s integrated iron ore and steelmaking project, which was suspended in the 1970s, will resume operations following the signing of an investment contract with Turkish group Tosyali Holding on Wednesday in Luanda, the Angolan press reported.

The contract was signed by the group’s president, Fuat Tosyali, during the 1st International Conference and Exhibition on the Mining Sector, and was witnessed by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, according to the Angop news agency.

Implemented by Tosyali Iron & Steel Angola, the project is located in Jamba municipality, Huila province, about 350 kilometres east of the city of Lubango.

Fuat Tosyali said the work would start as early as January 2020, with the first phase being to get the mine back into operation, after which it could start the industrial process of turning iron ore into steel.

The Turkish group, founded in 1952, has facilities on three continents and annually produces about 6 million tonnes of steel.
