Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro begins an official visit to the People’s Republic of China on Thursday, during which a set of new bilateral cooperation agreements are due to be signed, the Brazilian press reported, citing a source from Itamaraty, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The agreements are expected to focus on three key areas, according to Itamaraty – increasing and diversifying Chinese imports of Brazilian products, attracting Chinese investments to Brazil and cooperating in science and technology.

The holding of a business conference organised by the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex Brasil), should be the highlight of Bolsonaro’s visit to China, and as well as his presence the conference will be attended by both Brazilian and Chinese ministers.

The opening of the conference will include speeches by Bolsonaro, Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, and Chief Minister of the House, Onyx Lorenzoni, as well as Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina.

In the afternoon, Lorenzoni will give a talk on infrastructure investments in Brazil, followed by meetings with Chinese officials and entrepreneurs to publicise investment opportunities.

Ambassador Reinaldo de Almeida Salgado, quoted by the Gazeta do Povo newspaper, said that one of Brazil’s main interests in trade with China is to diversify agricultural exports, and the minister of agriculture has already been in China for a few days.

China’s President Xi Jinping is expected in Brasilia on 13 and 14 November to attend the BRICS summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). China has been Brazil’s largest trading partner since 2009.
