Cabo Verde is negotiating with China on a project to build the Praia Congress Centre, costing an estimated US$15 million, the Foreign and Commonwealth Ministry said on Saturday in Praia.
Luís Filipe Tavares, quoted by the Inforpress news agency, made the announcement when he returned to the country to review his visit to China to take part in the 1st China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo held in Changsha.
The minister said he attended a meeting of the coordinators of the China-Africa Forum, attended by several Foreign Ministers from African countries and said that he personally had a meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to analyse bilateral cooperation and consider new actions.
During the meeting, he spoke with Wang Yi about the construction of a new maternity hospital in São Vicente, the second phase of the Cidade Segura (Safe City) project, which is starting on the island of São Vicente, then on Sal and later on in Boa Vista.
“We are negotiating a large construction project, the Congress Centre of the city of Praia, which will be a very important project and will cost around US$15 million,” he said, noting that the aforementioned projects amounted to around US$80 million.
The Cape Verdean Minister of Foreign Affairs also referred to the pardoning of Cabo Verde’s debt to China in the amount of US$6 million, saying that there are other projects in the pipeline and that the Cape Verdean government is working in a new era of bilateral cooperation.
