São Tomé and Príncipe received more than 30,000 tourists in 2018, an increase of 7.14% over the same period of 2017, the director general of Tourism, Hugo Menezes told Macauhub on Wednesday.

Citing provisional data, Menezes said that the archipelago was visited in 2018 by just over 30,000 tourists against about 28,000 in 2017.

The largest number of tourists came from Portugal with just over 10,000 tourists, or about 33.3% of the total followed by Angola with about 4,000, France with 2,000, and Germany, Gabon and China with lower numbers.

The exemption of entry visas in the archipelago for some countries, the increased numbers of flights to and from São Tomé as well as the country’s tourist promotion abroad are seen as factors that led to an increase in the number of tourists in the last 12 months.
