The import of the 54 products that make up Angola’s basic basket has been restricted since 30 April to comply with a set of requirements that prioritises their acquisition in the domestic market, announced the Ministry of Economy and Planning.

The products that make up the Angolan basic basket of goods include sugar, rice, corn flour and wheat, beans, milk, food oil soap, salt, pasta, juice, beef, pork and chicken.

The statement released by the Ministry of Economy and Planning justifies the measure with the need to make the procedure for issuing prior import authorisations faster, more transparent and efficient allowing for the imports to be licensed by the Ministry of Trade, according to the Angop news agency.

The Angolan government has adjusted the general framework for imports of basic basket products, reducing the foreign exchange requirement from 3.3 billion to 2.6 billion kwanzas, according to the minister of Trade, Joffre Van-Dúnem.
