Visitor Expenditure Survey for the 2nd Quarter 2021

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that total spending of visitors (excluding gaming expenses) grew by 15.9% quarter-to-quarter to MOP7.16 billion in the second quarter of 2021, attributable to a 25.9% increase in visitor arrivals. Total spending of overnight visitors (MOP6.38 billion) and same-day visitors (MOP777 million) rose by 14.1% and 32.0% quarter-to-quarter respectively. In the first half of 2021, total spending of visitors amounted to MOP13.34 billion.

Per-capita spending of visitors was MOP3,271 in the second quarter, a drop of 8.0% quarter-to-quarter. Spending of visitors from mainland China went down by 6.0% quarter-to-quarter to MOP3,427, with spending of those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (MOP6,673) falling by 6.4%. Overnight visitors spent MOP5,603 on average, a decrease of 7.9% quarter-to-quarter. Meanwhile, per-capita spending of same-day visitors increased by 3.0% quarter-to-quarter to MOP740.

As regards type of expense, visitors spent primarily on shopping (65.0% of per-capita spending), food & beverage (15.9%) and accommodation (15.4%) in the second quarter. Per-capita shopping spending of visitors reduced by 6.7% quarter-to-quarter to MOP2,127, of which spending on clothing (MOP281) and local food products (MO242) declined by 29.9% and 22.6% respectively. Analysed by main purpose of visit, per-capita spending of visitors coming to Macao for vacation (MOP6,376) and shopping (MOP3,347) fell by 6.1% and 20.4% quarter-to-quarter respectively, while spending of those coming for business & professional purposes (MOP4,146) recorded a growth of 23.3%.

With respect to visitors’ comments in the second quarter of 2021, the proportions of visitors who complimented on environmental hygiene (96.8%) and public facilities (95.4%) held stable compared to the first quarter. The share of visitors who were satisfied with hotel services (94.5%) grew by 0.3 percentage points quarter-to-quarter, while the proportion of those who considered that there were adequate points of tourist attractions in Macao (74.0%) rose by 4.2 percentage points. Meanwhile, all the shares of visitors who expressed favourable comments on services of retail shops (93.0%), restaurants (91.2%) and public transport (88.9%) shrank by 0.3 percentage points quarter-to-quarter.
