MARKET BRIEFING –MEXICO
OVERALL ECONOMIC SITUATION
Mexico is located on the south of North America. It borders the United States in the north, Guatemala and Belize in the south, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the south-west. Mexico is a major economy in Latin America, a member of the North American Free Trade Zones and an open economy which has signed free trade agreements with 44 countries. The country has diverse industries with a relatively more developed petro-chemical, electricity, mining, metallurgy and the manufacturing industry.
Major energy resources include petroleum, natural gas, uranium and coal. Metal mining include iron, magnesium, copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, antimony, mercury, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium. Non-metal mining includes sulphur, graphite, wollastonite, trona and fluorite.

Industry
Industry is a major component of Mexico’s domestic economy, providing 30% of the employment in the country. The country possesses a comparatively complete and diverse industrial system, including light industries such as food, textiles, leather production, clothing, paper-making, as well as heavy industry like iron and steel, petro-chemical, automobiles, machinery production. The energy industry is relatively more developed, with long established industries such as petroleum and mining. The manufacturing industry is one of the most important industries in Mexico, comprising of over 80% of export revenue and a quarter of the GDP.
Mining
Mexico is the largest mining surveying and investment destination in Latin America and ranks fourth worldwide. From 2007 to 2012, the mining industry attracted investment of US$25 billion. According to the Mexican Mining Chamber, the industry drew in nearly US$8 billion in 2013, showing a year-on-year increase of 4.6%.
Agriculture
Mexico’s major seasonal cash crops include corn, sorghum, barley, string beans, wheat, rice, potatoes and chilli peppers, perennial cash crops include coffee, oranges, mangos, lemons, avocados, bananas, peaches and grapes. Total ranch area covers 7,900 hectares with major livestock reared being cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens. Major agriculture regions are Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas and Guanajuato.
Service Industry
Service industry mainly includes business, finance, telecommunications, real estate, tourism, insurance, advertising and media. According to the data provided by the National Statistical Institute of Mexico, the service industry grew by 2.1% in 2013, contributing to 60% of the GDP, being the major force of national economic growth for three consecutive years.
