[2019-10-30] Trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries exceeds US$96 billion from January to August

The value of trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries grew by 2.31% year-on-year to US$96.984 billion between January and August 2019, according to official Chinese figures released by Forum Macau.

In this eight-month period, China exported products worth US$27.227 billion (-1.66% year-on-year) to the eight Portuguese-speaking countries and imported US$69.446 million (+3.97%), leading to a trade deficit of US$41.908 billion.

Brazil accounted for 75% of all trade in the period with bilateral trade with China worth US$73.012 billion (+3.04%), with Chinese companies selling goods worth US$21.940 billion (-3.35%) and buying products worth US$51.071 billion (+6.06%).

Angola came in second by value, with two-way trade worth US$17.671 billion (-2.50%), with China selling goods worth US$1.274 billion (-10.81%) and buying products worth US$16.396 billion (-1.79%).

Trade with Portugal amounted to US$2.673 billion (+13.43%) in the first eight months of the year, with Chinese companies selling US$1.745 billion (+21.25%) and importing products worth US$1.564 billion (+4.12%).

Trade with Mozambique totalled US$1.652 billion (+4.53%), with China selling US$1.248 billion (-3.47%) and Mozambican companies exporting products worth US$403 million (-7.67%).

The value of trade between China and the other Portuguese-speaking countries – Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste – reached US$154.26 million in the period under review.
