MARKET BRIEFING – PERU

OVERALL ECONOMIC SITUATION

Peru is situated in western South America, bordering Ecuador and Colombia in the north, Brazil in the east, Chile in the south, Bolivia in the south-east, and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The country is rich in mineral resources, being one of the twelve largest mineral production countries in the world. Major mineral products include gold, silver, bronze, zinc, and aluminium. Forests cover 78 million hectares, comprising 58% of the country’s total area, which is second only to Brazil in South America. There are abundant marine resources with fish meal production ranking amongst the highest in the world.
Peru is a traditional agricultural and mining country, with economic development being about average for Latin American countries. In recent years, Peru’s economy has been developing rapidly, recording a growth of 6.29% and 5.02% in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES

Industry

Major industries are processing and assembly. In 2013, the manufacturing and construction industry recorded the growth of 1.4% and 9.21% respectively.

Agricultural and fisheries Industries

The agricultural and fisheries industries made up to 7.3% of the country’s GDP in 2012, a third of the population is involved in agriculture and Peru is a major producer of fish meal and fish oil.

Tourism

Peru was the centre of the Inca Empire and thus the country possesses rich tourism resources. In 2012, the country received a total of 3.49 million visitors, generating foreign exchange revenue of US$2.657 billion. Major tourist attractions are the City of Cusco, Machu Picchu, Plaza Mayor and the Gold Museum.
