Information on Trade in Goods between Mainland China and Portuguese-speaking Countries in 2020

In 2020, the total trade in goods between Mainland China and Portuguese-speaking Countries was valued at US$145.32 billion, a decrease of 3.8% year-on-year. It turns up that the value of China imports from Portuguese-speaking Countries was US$102.1 billion, or a decrease of 4.5% year-on-year; the value of exports to Portuguese-speaking Countries was US$43.23 billion, or a decrease of 2.1% comparing with last year. Based on the situation of trade in goods between Mainland China and Portuguese-speaking Countries during 2020, there are five main characteristics: first, the bilateral trade with most Portuguese-speaking Countries maintains a positive growth; second, the ranking of trade partners remains stable; third, trade on general goods in a dominant position; fourth, the continuous unleashing of co-operation potential; fifth, trade deficit has been reduced to some extend.

Through the analysis on trade in goods between 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions of Mainland China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries in 2020, it is noted that Shandong Province registered the largest trade volume with the Portuguese-speaking Countries highlighting a total amount of US$23.81 billion, followed by Beijing (US$21.82 billion) and Jiangsu (US$16.05 billion). In terms of imports from Portuguese-speaking Countries, the three provinces/regions with the largest trade volume were Beijing, Shandong and Jiangsu; in terms of exports to Portuguese-speaking Countries, the three provinces/regions with the largest trade volume were Zhejiang, Guangdong and Jiangsu.

Regarding the types goods trade between Mainland China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries in 2020, we noted that most China imports from Portuguese-speaking Countries belongs to 5th section – “Mineral products” (US$55.82 billion); the largest amount of Chinese exports to Portuguese-speaking Countries falls into the 16th section-Machinery and Mechanical Appliances; Electrical Equipment; Parts thereof; sound recorders and reproducers, Television Image and Sound Recorders and reproducers, and parts and accessories of such articles (US$17.81 billion). On the other hand, the amount of food products imported by Mainland China from the Portuguese-speaking Countries was around US$34,25 billions, accounting for 33.5% of the import value. It is noted that the import of “Yellow soybeans, not for cultivation” (HS: 12019010) reached the largest amount of US$24.89 billion, accounting for 72% of the value of imported food products. Finally, the total trade volume of “Articles of B2C cross-border e-commerce” (HS: 98050000) between Mainland China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries was approximately US$66.443 million, of which 90% were exports to Portuguese-speaking Countries.
