22nd MIF: increase co-operation to create business opportunities

MI68-P22

To take advantage of the great opportunities presented by regional co-operation, Macao must exploit its strengths to face challenges and make the best of its chances to develop. The 22nd Macao International Trade and Investment Fair (22nd MIF) intends to provide Macao enterprises with a high-quality and efficient platform for promoting their products and services, helping to create new business opportunities so as to assist exhibitors and visitors in business start ups, development and transformation.

One of the highlights of this year’s MIF will be the introduction of Guangdong province as the “Partner Province” and Angola as the “Partner Country”. The 22nd MIF will, for the first time, co-organise high-level keynote forums with Cambodia, a country along the “Belt and Road”.

Promoting co-operation

This year’s MIF is hosted by the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) and co-organised by 15 government agencies, chambers or business associations in Macao, Mainland China and Hong Kong. The 22nd MIF will be held at the convention and exhibition centre of the Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel from 19 to 21 October 2017.

The title of the theme of MIF this year will again be Co-operation – Key to Business Opportunities, with a view to reinforcing the position of Macao as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure and as a Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.

MIF this year will strive to improve the performance of Macao as a platform and promote the implementation of One Centre, One Platform policies. MIF will also endeavour to seize business opportunities arising from the “Belt and Road” initiative, and help companies expand into markets in the countries covered.

This year’s MIF will again provide its Business-Matching Service, free to all entrepreneurs taking part. The service will help entrepreneurs look for partners, promote their products and services and pursue business opportunities.

In the light of the official signing in July 2017 of the Framework Agreement on Deepening Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Co-operation in the Development of the Bay Area, the 22nd MIF means to help Macao and other cities in the Bay Area collaborate to create a hub for innovation.

Supporting SMEs

One of the highlights of MIF this year is its support for the cultural and creative industries and small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in Macao, which will help make the economy of the city more diverse.

The event this year will have a Macao SMEs Pavilion, set up jointly by IPIM and the Macao Chamber of Commerce, with the Macau Small and Medium Enterprises Association and the Macau Business Women’s Association as co-organisers.

The Macao SME Pavilion will contain about 100 booths, most promoting products Made in Macao, Macao brands and products distributed by Macao enterprises as agents – especially products made in Portuguese-speaking Countries. The booths will exhibit merchandise such as souvenirs, food and drink, the products of cultural and creative industries, household goods, electronic gadgets, handicrafts and accessories.

To promote innovation and entrepreneurship among young people in Macao, the 22nd MIF will offer concessions to eligible enterprises run by young people, and help them market branded products by displaying and selling them on-site. This will support Macao’s youth innovation and entrepreneurship and help them explore potential business co-operation opportunities.

Growing size, recognition

Since its inception in 1996 MIF has developed into an event that encompasses an exhibition, business negotiation sessions, forums and conferences and support services for SMEs. MIF was the first exhibition in Macao given Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) approval.

The 21st MIF occupied more than 30,000 square metres of floor space containing about 1,600 booths. It attracted delegations or representatives from more than 50 countries and regions, and helped facilitate more than 430 business negotiation sessions and contract signings. More than 40 forums, seminars and conferences were held during the event. Portugal became the first Partner Country and Beijing became the first Partner City at MIF last year, with both places sending high-level delegations.
