The Jan de Nul Group has completed the maintenance dredging of the port of Maputo which returned the port to the depth reached during dredging carried out in 2016, said the group in a statement released on Wednesday.

The statement added that the port of Maputo can receive vessels of up to 80,000 tonnes since 2017, after the group carried out dredging that deepened the access channel and the quays from a depth of 11 metres to depths of between 13.05 and 14.4 metres.

The work focused on the channels of Matola, Humansdorp, Polana, Alexandra and Norte and involved the removal of 1.4 million cubic meters of sediment.

The agreement now considered to be concluded, to conduct maintenance dredging, was signed in August 2019 by the Luxembourg-based group and the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC).

The MPDC is a partnership of state port and rail company Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) and Porticus Indico, which is a partnership of South Africa’s Grindrod, DP World of the United Arab Emirates and local company Moçambique Gestores.
