[2020-01-13] Year-on-year inflation rate in Mozambique falls to 3.5% in 2019

The year-on-year inflation registered in Mozambique in 2019 fell by 41 basis points to 3.5%, said the National Statistics Institute (INE) in a note published on Friday.

INE said that the food and non-alcoholic drinks category was the main one responsible for the general price increase, accounting for 2.41 percentage points of the total recorded.

An analysis of accumulated inflation by product highlights the rising price of tomatoes, full meals in restaurants, onions, wheat bread, butter beans, peanuts and new cars, whose full impact is estimated at around 2.23 percentage points.

December was the month that INE considered more severe, with an increase of 1.28%, due to an increased rise in the prices of fresh products, especially tomatoes, onions, lettuce and kale.

The Consumer Price Index is calculated based on data collected from the three main cities in the country, including Maputo (capital), Beira (centre), and Nampula (north), which showed that the country recorded a monthly increase in prices of 1.28%.

The inflation rate, measured as the average variation over the last 12 months against the preceding 12 months, according to INE totalled 2.78%.
