China is ready to deepen its cooperation with Mozambique, particularly with regard to infrastructure construction, the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique said last week when he took part in the inauguration of a road rebuilt by a Chinese company.

The Chinese ambassador to Mozambique, Su Jia, spoke during the inauguration ceremony of National Road Number Six (EN6), which links the port city of Beira, in central Sofala province with the border village of Machipanda, in Manica province. also in the central region of the country.

The road, which is about 287 kilometres long, benefited from reconstruction and extension works, which were funded by the China Export and Import Bank and executed by Chinese company Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation (AFECC).

Su Jian said the EN6 project is of vital importance as it crosses the country from east to west, serving inland provinces as well as neighbouring landlocked countries such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia and others, and therefore it will increase the mobility of people and goods in the southern region of Africa.

“Building infrastructure is one of four priority areas defined by the Mozambican government. In recent years, Sino-Mozambican infrastructure cooperation has achieved many remarkable results,” said the ambassador, pointing out several projects completed with China’s support, and others underway.

Su Jian highlighted the Maputo-Catembe Bridge, the Maputo Ring Road, the refurbishment of the Beira fishing port, the National Data Centre, the Agricultural Processing Centre, three technical and vocational training institutes, as well as some other projects that over the past five years have benefited from Chinese funding.

“Another infrastructure is under construction, such as the Mozambique China Cooperation Centre (in the city of Maputo) for example,” he said, quoted by the AIM news agency.
