The Angolan Government proposes to build six dams on the main rivers of the southern province of Namibe, to retain water and reduce movement of people, settling them through the region’s agricultural and industrial development, the director of the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH) said this week in Moçâmedes.

The construction of the dams on the Caraculo, Bero, Giraúl, Inamangando, Bentiaba and Carujamba rivers is currently estimated to cost US$800 million, according to the Jornal de Angola newspaper.

Manuel Quintino also said that the construction of the six dams aims, in addition to retaining the large amount of water that flows into the sea during the rainy season, to drive agricultural and industrial development taking advantage of the good characteristics for tomato production, among several other products.

The project for the construction of the six dams follows a survey carried out between 2013 and 2018, and is currently in the phase of raising financial resources, before the launch of public tenders.
