The World Food Programme (WFP) will provide Mozambique’s agricultural sector with the financing of US$300 million to improve the country’s food and nutritional security, and a memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday in Maputo.

WFP Mozambique Representative Karin Manente said the memorandum would increase humanitarian assistance and support the government’s efforts to combat hunger in the country, focusing on the central and northern areas, which in March and April last were hit by cyclones Idai and Kenneth, and in the southern region is seriously affected by prolonged drought.

Manente, quoted by the AIM news agency, said that half of the amount had already been handed over to the Ministry of Agriculture to implement measures to boost production and productivity, as the agricultural sector is extremely important for the country’s development.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Higino de Marrule, said that the Government is drafting a Strategic Plan to eradicate hunger by 2030.

The minister said that the funding will also allow continued support to the Agricultural Markets System, a platform that allows the collection, analysis and dissemination of prices of agricultural products, and guides agrarian entrepreneurs on the methods to be observed in marketing their products.
