China’s health authorities have approved 25 more refrigeration units in Brazil to export meat to the country, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply said on Monday in Brasilia.

The approvals that were communicated to the Brazilian government include units of groups such as BRF, Marfrig and Minerva Foods, according to government information and market announcements.

“Of the new establishments approved, 17 are producers of beef, six of chicken, one of pork and one of donkey meat, and companies can start exporting immediately,” according to the official statement.

These approvals come at a time when Brazil’s meat exports are experiencing a positive year, driven especially by strong demand from China, which has significantly increased its imports, notably of pork, due to an outbreak of African swine fever.

With these new approvals, the number of refrigeration units authorised to export meat to the Chinese market has increased to 89.

The Secretary of Trade and International Relations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Orlando Ribeiro, said on Monday that the government is negotiating with China to approve more refrigeration units.

Also on Monday, China’s ambassador to Brazil, Yang Wanming, said his country is expected to double its beef consumption by 2026, which favours Brazil, a major producer of this type of product.
