South Africa plans to acquire oil and natural gas extracted in Angola, according to an intention expressed by the South African Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mathashe, to the Angolan Secretary of State for Geology and Mines, Jânio Corrêa Victor, on Thursday in Perth, Australia, on the sidelines of the “Africa Down Under” conference.

The South African Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy said that a mission will travel to Luanda to meet the Angolan Minister of Mineral Resources and Oil, Diamantino Azevedo, so that his country can start receiving oil and gas extracted in Angola, according to the Angop news agency.

The opening of the Africa Down Under conference, which runs from 4-6 September, was marked by a speech by Bill Repard, a member of the organisation, who stressed the importance of Australia’s intervention in the development of the mining sector in Africa.

The Angolan delegation to the conference hopes to interest Australian companies, including the two large mining groups BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, as well as a number of smaller mining companies, in the opportunities in the country, said the Secretary of State for Geology and Mines.

In addition to the Secretary of State for Geology and Mines, the delegation includes members of the board and technicians of national diamond mining company Endiama and the national diamond trading company, Sodiam.
