The consortium made up of BP Exploration Operating and the US company Kosmos Energy at the end of November plans to begin a three-dimensional seismic survey in block 13 of the São Tomé and Príncipe Sea, according to an official announcement.

The start date of the seismic survey was made public by the consortium representative, Daniel Shirmbor, during a presentation on Tuesday in São Tomé of the environmental, health and safety impact study, as part of a seismic project valued at just over US$20 million.

The announcement of the date for seismic surveys in block 13 comes five days after the BP and Kosmos consortium provided US$4.5 million to buy a generator set to mitigate the energy crisis in the archipelago, as part of the operations’ social commitment in the São Tomé sea.

Valid for 28 years, the first eight being for research and the remaining 20 for development and production, the contracts make BP the operator of blocks 10 and 13, with the São Tomé state holding a 15% stake in each of them.

In addition to the exclusive economic exploration zone São Tomé and Príncipe has another joint exploration area with Nigeria, on the basis of a treaty that provides 60% of revenues for the Nigerian state and 40% for the archipelago, and talks are underway for a third shared zone with Equatorial Guinea.
