Foreign ministers from Cabo Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe on Wednesday in Mindelo signed agreements for mutual visa exemption and recognition of driving licenses between the two countries, the local press reported.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Communities of São Tomé and Príncipe, Elsa Teixeira Pinto, said the signing of the agreements was a “very important” moment, because it establishes two “great instruments” that “make life easier” for citizens.

Cape Verdean minister Luís Filipe Tavares said that these two cooperation agreements will make it possible to respond to “long-held hopes” of the two peoples, according to the Inforpress news agency.

“I often say that if there is a country in which the São Tomeans can feel at home it is Cabo Verde,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities, for whom this issue of mobility should be considered as the “priority of priorities” in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and an example to be followed by the other countries.

Tavares said he intends to re-launch the joint commission between the two countries, “something that is already being prepared with a working visit by the minister of São Tomé to Cabo Verde, so that the commission will be fully operational by 2020.”
