Investment in education transforms people’s lives, the progress of companies and the destiny of a country, São Tomé and Príncipes’ Prime Minister Jorge Bom Jesus said on Wednesday at the inauguration of the Confucius Institute of China at the São Tomé and Príncipe Public University.

The prime minister also said that human resources are just as important, if not more so than natural and material resources and that countries such as Japan, China and even the Seychelles Islands are examples of this, according to the STP Press news agency Press.

Noting that education is not an expense, but rather an investment, Jorge Bom Jesus said that “education is a fundamental right set out in our constitution, a legitimate aspiration of our citizens and a decisive factor in the development process.”

In addition to the speech by the Prime Minister, the ceremony was also attended by the Chinese ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe, Wang Wei, the dean of the University of Hubei, Xie Hongxing and the dean of the Public University of São Tomé and Príncipe, Peregrino Costa.

Headquartered in Beijing, China, the Confucius Institute is a non-profit public education organisation linked to the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and its aim is to promote the language and culture of China and support the teaching of the Chinese language as well as to facilitate cultural exchanges around the world through the associated Confucius Institutes.
