The Angolan capital’s 4 de Fevereiro International Airport is to undergo renovation and expansion costing an estimated US$300 million, Transportation Minister Ricardo de Abreu revealed on Thursday in Luanda.

The project work will last from 18 to 24 months, starting in 2020, and covers expansion of the terminal space, especially the check-in area, accommodation for passengers, waiting rooms, offices for different companies, the parking area and improved perimeter security.

When it is finished, 4 de Fevereiro International Airport will have six jet bridges for boarding/disembarking and be able to handle 4 million passengers per year, as opposed to the current 1.5 million.

The airport will continue to operate while the work is being done, Ricardo de Abreu said, emphasising that the project did not affect the process of building the new Luanda International Airport, whose plan is being finalised, as indicated at the May Council of Ministers meeting.

He said it was possible that it may be necessary to rehouse people who “have settled near the airport fence by runways 2 and 3, in order to guarantee that perimeter security is in line with international recommendations.”
